Sailor Packs: Help Us Gear Up for Summer

CYCF is raising $7,500 to fund Sailor Packs for youth participants this summer—150 packs at $50 each. Sailor Packs are gear kits distributed on the first day of camp: a swimsuit, water shoes, a hat, a quick-dry shirt, a towel, sunscreen, and sunglasses. Everything a participant needs to spend a full week comfortably on the water. CYCF covers meals and transportation too—so participants arrive ready to sail.

"Sailing can feel intimidating," said Caroline O'Malley, CYCF's community sailing manager. "Sailor Packs are one of the ways we make sure every kid who walks through the door feels like they belong here from day one."

Delphine F. Rankin, CEO of One Family Illinois and a longtime CYCF partner, put the challenge plainly: "For many families, even $20 for a swimsuit can add up quickly, especially when multiplied for multiple children."

Last year, CYCF distributed nearly two hundred packs. Any unused items are saved for future seasons. This summer, Sailor Packs will be provided to youth at CYCF camps at CYC Monroe and 31st Street Harbor. Additionally, Sailor Packs are provided on an as-needed basis for CYCF scholarship recipients attending CYC Belmont’s Sailing School, Jackson Park YC Sailing School and Columbia YC Sailing School.

A gift of $50 outfits one young sailor for the summer. A gift of $100 outfits two.
